REVIEW: 3

3 is a romantic comedy/drama with some mild supernatural elements, written by Michael K. Ward and directed by Peter Ney.

Kai (Caleb Ruminer) is an elementary-school art teacher that has a simple, pleasant, albeit boring life. Not that he doesn't have some issues, being plagued by bad dreams and family woes, but things seems to be going along on cruise control, which works well enough for the moment.

This all comes crashing down when his job is cut due to bureaucratic nonsense, so he does what any self-respecting suddenly jobless person does: he hits the local bar.

There he meets an "Oracle" (Eric Roberts) a kindly, mischieveous sort of fellow who predicts the future, in the form of a beautiful woman, Mia (Anna Grace Barlow) who will enter the bar, break a heel, and quite possibly change the course of Kai's life. He also predicts that in 3 days' time Kai will die. No big deal!

Over the course of the next 3 days, with a little help from Episcopalian Minister Father Joe (Michael Pare) Kai must make amends with his brother, resurrect his dreams of being an artist, and begin a new relationship with Mia. Will it all work out? Is the Oracle telling the truth? Is Kai gonna die? I guess you'll have to watch it for yourself to find out.

This is a higher budget indie with strong production value, solid acting, and a decent story. Is it a little Shmaltzy? Yes. Is it a little by-the-numbers? Also yes. Does it break any new ground? No, but it's certainly inoffensive, and the leads do a bang-up job with Anna Grace Barlow in particular delivering a stand-out performance.

The soundtrack is really great, featuring a lot of indie bands, which helps to move the story forward, and nothing goes together better than indie film and indie music! At the end of the day, while 3 is not likely to blow you away, it's definitely good enough to keep you invested to see what happens in the end.
